Common TMJ/TMD Symptoms

TMD (temporomandibular disorder) is genuinely common — an estimated 5–15% of adults have it, most often between ages 20 and 40. Symptoms can include:

What Causes It?

Most TMD traces back to the small, cushion-like disc that sits between the jawbone and the skull socket, letting the joint glide smoothly as you open and close. When that disc slips out of its normal position, clicking or locking can result. Clenching or grinding your teeth (often at night), jaw trauma, and everyday stress can all aggravate the joint and surrounding muscles, though for most patients the exact trigger isn't a single obvious cause.

The good news: only about 5% of people with TMD actually need active treatment, and for most, symptoms ease on their own over time with simple self-care — a softer diet during flare-ups, avoiding wide yawning and gum-chewing, and heat or ice.
