Dental Bridge vs. Implant: Which Is Right for You?

A missing tooth generally leaves you choosing between two main replacement approaches: a bridge or an implant. Both work, but they solve the problem in different ways, and the right one depends on your specific situation.
How a Bridge Works
A bridge replaces the missing tooth by anchoring a false tooth to the two natural teeth on either side of the gap, which are shaped down and capped with crowns to support it. It requires no surgery, is typically completed faster than an implant, and tends to cost less upfront.
How an Implant Works
An implant replaces just the missing tooth itself — a titanium post is placed directly into the jawbone, left to integrate over several months, and then topped with a crown. It doesn't require altering the healthy teeth next to the gap at all.
The Real Tradeoffs
A bridge's biggest downside is that it requires reshaping two otherwise-healthy teeth, which is permanent and puts more long-term load on them. An implant preserves those teeth entirely and also helps maintain the jawbone in that area (bone naturally shrinks without a tooth root stimulating it), but the process takes longer and typically costs more upfront — though its longer typical lifespan can make the cost-per-year comparison closer than it first appears.
Which One Fits You
Adequate bone density, the health of the neighboring teeth, timeline, and budget all factor into which makes more sense for your case. We'll walk through your specific situation and give you a clear recommendation rather than a generic answer.
