Tired of the Snoring? So Is Your Bed Partner.
Not every snorer has sleep apnea, and not every treatment for snoring needs to be complicated. We'll help you figure out what's actually going on, and what's worth trying.

What Causes Snoring, and When Is It More Than That?
Snoring happens when air moving past relaxed tissue in the throat — the soft palate, tongue, and tonsils — causes it to vibrate. Sleep position, nasal congestion, alcohol before bed, weight, and the natural shape of your airway can all play a role, and for a lot of people it's harmless, if annoying for whoever's sharing the bed.
The exception is when snoring is a visible sign of obstructive sleep apnea — especially if it's loud and irregular, involves witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping, or choking, or comes with daytime fatigue and morning headaches. That combination is worth a proper evaluation, not just a snoring fix.
Am I a Candidate?
If you're a habitual snorer — disrupting your own sleep or a partner's, without the red flags above — a custom oral appliance is often a straightforward, comfortable option. If you've already been diagnosed with mild obstructive sleep apnea, or suspect it based on symptoms, the same appliance category can often treat both at once.
If you snore loudly and have noticed (or been told about) breathing pauses, gasping, or choking during sleep, we'd rather start with an evaluation for sleep apnea than treat snoring in isolation — see Sleep Apnea Treatment and take the quiz there.
Comparing Your Options
| Lifestyle Changes | Over-the-Counter Mouthguard | Custom Oral Appliance (Panthera) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Mild, occasional snoring | Trying oral appliance therapy before committing to custom | Habitual snoring, or snoring alongside diagnosed sleep apnea |
| Fit | N/A | Generic, self-molded ("boil-and-bite") | Digitally designed from a scan of your own teeth and jaw |
| Jaw position | N/A | Fixed, not individually set | Precisely set and adjustable (titrated) over follow-up visits |
| Dental/TMJ risk | None | Poor fit can strain the jaw joint or shift teeth over time with prolonged use | Monitored by a dentist at regular fit checks |
| FDA status | N/A | Sold over the counter; not all are FDA-cleared | FDA-cleared for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring |
Loud, disruptive snoring — especially with witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, or choking — can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, not just simple snoring. See our Sleep Apnea Treatment page and take the "Do I Have Sleep Apnea?" quiz if any of that sounds familiar.

FAQ: Snoring Treatment at Zusin Dental, NYC
Snoring happens when air moves past relaxed tissue in the throat — the soft palate, tongue, and tonsils — causing it to vibrate. Sleep position, nasal congestion, alcohol before bed, weight, and natural airway anatomy can all make it more likely.
No. Simple snoring is usually steady in volume, doesn't involve breathing pauses, and doesn't cause significant daytime fatigue. Sleep apnea often involves louder, more irregular snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping or choking, and daytime symptoms like fatigue or morning headaches. A sleep study, ordered by a physician, is the only way to know for certain.
They can help some people with mild, occasional snoring, but “boil-and-bite” devices are molded once, at a fixed jaw position that isn't individualized to you — and can't be adjusted (titrated) the way a custom appliance can. Poor fit is also a real concern: an ill-fitting device worn regularly can strain the jaw joint or gradually shift tooth position, which is why a custom-fitted appliance, monitored by a dentist, is generally the safer long-term option for regular use.
There isn't strong scientific evidence that mouth taping meaningfully reduces snoring — the studies that exist are small, and most of what's out there is anecdotal. It also carries real safety risk for anyone with nasal congestion, a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils, or undiagnosed sleep apnea, since it can make it harder to breathe if you can't fully clear your nose during the night. It's not something we recommend without talking to a doctor first.
Coverage depends on the diagnosis. Custom oral appliance therapy for snoring alone (without a sleep apnea diagnosis) is often considered elective and may not be covered by medical insurance, while treatment for a diagnosed case of obstructive sleep apnea is frequently billed through medical insurance instead. We'll walk you through what applies to your situation before treatment begins.
Dr. Boris Zusin takes a digital scan or impression of your teeth, which is sent to the lab for custom fabrication of your appliance. Once it arrives, we check the fit, make any needed adjustments, and give you instructions for nightly wear — with follow-up visits to fine-tune the jaw position as needed.
