A Coordinated Approach to Restoring Your Smile
Whether it's one tooth or several, restorative dentistry is about function first: resolving decay or infection, protecting what's left of a damaged tooth, and replacing what's missing so your bite works the way it should. Zusin Dental provides comprehensive dental restoration for patients throughout New York City, from a single filling or crown up to full mouth reconstruction, coordinated at our Upper West Side office.
Am I a Candidate?
If you have a cavity, a cracked or broken tooth, an old restoration that's failing, or one or more missing teeth, restorative treatment can address it. That includes patients considering full mouth reconstruction after years of untreated decay, wear, or multiple failing teeth — not just single-tooth cases. A consultation and exam will determine exactly which restoration (or combination of restorations) is right for your case — we'll walk you through the options rather than assuming you already know which one you need.
What Counts as Restorative Dentistry
Restorative dentistry is the broad category covering any treatment that repairs a damaged tooth or replaces a missing one — as opposed to purely cosmetic work, though the two overlap in practice. Here's how the pieces fit together, and where to go on our site for the details of each.
Tooth-Colored Fillings
The most common restoration — composite resin that repairs a cavity, chip, or crack while blending in with the surrounding tooth. Usually a single visit. See Tooth-Colored Fillings.
Crowns & Bridges
A crown covers a tooth that's lost too much structure to hold a filling reliably; a bridge fills the space left by one or more missing teeth using the neighboring teeth as anchors. See Crown and Bridges.
Dental Implants
A titanium post placed in the jawbone that replaces a missing tooth's root, topped with a crown, bridge, or denture. The most durable way to replace one or more missing teeth. See Dental Implants.
Dentures
Full, partial, or implant-supported prosthetics that replace some or all of the teeth in an arch. See Dentures.
Root Canal Treatment
Removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth itself can be saved rather than extracted. We diagnose and refer root canal treatment to trusted endodontist specialists, then restore the tooth with a crown. See Root Canal Treatment.
Extractions
When a tooth truly can't be saved, extraction (referred to a trusted oral surgeon) is the last resort — usually paired with a plan for what replaces the tooth afterward. See Extractions.
How We Decide Which Restoration You Need
The guiding principle across all restorative treatment is the same one we apply throughout the practice: start with the least invasive option that will actually hold up, and escalate only as far as the tooth genuinely requires. A small cavity gets a filling, not a crown. A cracked tooth with enough remaining structure gets a crown, not an extraction. A missing tooth gets evaluated for an implant before we default to a bridge that requires cutting down two healthy neighboring teeth. That sequencing — and being upfront with you about which category your tooth actually falls into — is what separates a restorative plan built around your case from one built around a single default procedure.
Restorative vs. Cosmetic Dentistry
These two categories aren't mutually exclusive, and in practice many treatments do both jobs at once. A crown restores a broken tooth's function and its appearance; a composite filling repairs decay while remaining invisible. Where the terms diverge is intent: restorative dentistry is oriented around function, health, and structure — can you chew normally, is the tooth protected from further damage, is an infection resolved — while purely cosmetic treatments like whitening or veneers on healthy teeth are oriented around appearance alone. If you're weighing a broader combination of treatments built primarily around how your smile looks, our Smile Makeover page covers that side of the practice.

FAQ: Restorative Dentistry at Zusin Dental, NYC
Restorative dentistry covers any treatment that repairs a damaged tooth or replaces a missing one — fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, dental implants, and root canal treatment. The goal is restoring normal function (chewing, speaking) and protecting the tooth from further damage, though many restorations improve appearance as well.
Full mouth reconstruction (sometimes called full mouth restoration) combines multiple restorative treatments — crowns, bridges, implants, and sometimes root canal-related work — to rebuild function and structure across most or all of the teeth in one or both arches. It's typically recommended after significant tooth wear, multiple missing or failing teeth, or long-term untreated decay, rather than for a single damaged tooth. Most patients considering dental restoration on this scale in NYC start with a full exam and imaging so we can sequence the plan correctly, tooth by tooth, rather than treating everything as one procedure.
It depends on how much of the tooth is damaged or whether it's missing entirely. A consultation and exam — including X-rays where needed — lets us see the extent of the damage and recommend the least invasive option that will reliably hold up, rather than defaulting to the same procedure for every case.
Most PPO dental plans cover a meaningful portion of restorative treatment like fillings, crowns, and root canal-related restorations, typically at a lower coinsurance tier than preventive care. Coverage for implants and dentures varies more by plan. We'll help you understand your specific benefits before treatment begins.
It depends entirely on which treatment your tooth needs — a composite filling in New York City typically runs a few hundred dollars, a crown roughly $1,200–$2,500, a bridge about $2,500–$6,000, and a single-tooth implant with crown often $4,000–$6,000+. See each treatment's page for a fuller cost breakdown, or ask us for an itemized estimate at your consultation.
Most damaged teeth can be saved with the right combination of treatment — a filling, crown, or root canal followed by a crown. Extraction is reserved for teeth with damage or infection too extensive to reliably restore, and even then, we'll walk through what replaces the tooth afterward as part of the same conversation.
