Full and Partial Dentures
Full dentures replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth while working alongside your remaining natural teeth. Nationally, about 15% of seniors 65 and older have no remaining natural teeth, and dentures remain one of the most common ways to restore a full, functional smile after tooth loss. Types of Dentures
There isn't one kind of denture — the right type depends on how many teeth are missing and whether you want a removable or implant-anchored option.
Complete (Conventional) Dentures
Replace an entire arch of missing teeth, resting on the gums. Conventional dentures are placed after any remaining teeth are removed and the gum tissue has fully healed, which can take several months, resulting in a more precise, stable fit than an immediate denture.
Immediate (Same-Day) Dentures
Placed the same day your remaining teeth are removed, so you're never without teeth — not even for a single day. Because they're fitted before healing begins, immediate dentures typically need one or more relines once your gums and jawbone finish changing shape over the following months. Ask us at your consultation whether you're a candidate for same-day dentures.
Partial Dentures
Replace one or more missing teeth while your remaining natural teeth stay in place, using clasps or precision attachments that anchor to those teeth for stability. A flexible partial denture — made from a lightweight, gum-colored material rather than rigid acrylic or metal — is an option for some patients who want a more comfortable fit around remaining teeth.
Implant-Retained (Implant-Supported) Dentures
Instead of resting on the gums alone, an implant-retained denture anchors to a small number of dental implants placed in the jawbone, offering significantly more stability for chewing and speaking than a conventional or immediate denture. Getting Used to New Dentures
A new denture rarely feels completely natural on day one, and that's normal. Expect some increased saliva flow and mild soreness at first as your gums and cheek muscles adapt to holding it in place; starting with soft foods cut into small pieces makes the adjustment period easier before working back up to a normal diet. Speech can also feel different for the first week or two — reading out loud is a common way to retrain your tongue and lips around the new shape in your mouth.
Daily care matters for both comfort and denture lifespan: brush your denture every day with a denture-specific cleanser (not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive), remove it for at least four hours out of every 24 — typically overnight — to let your gum tissue rest, and keep it in water or a denture-soaking solution when it's out so it doesn't dry out and warp. With good care, a denture typically lasts around 7–10 years before it needs to be relined or replaced as your jawbone and gum tissue naturally change shape over time.

If you're missing all or some of your natural teeth and it's affecting your diet, speech, or facial structure, dentures may be right for you. A consultation will determine whether complete or partial dentures fit your needs.
Impressions of your mouth are sent to a dental lab, which can take several weeks to fabricate the denture. You'll attend fitting appointments throughout to make sure it's a perfect fit once complete.
Some initial discomfort while your gums adapt is normal, and it can take time to learn to hold the denture in place using facial muscles. Starting with soft foods helps until you're chewing comfortably.
With good care, dentures can last several years; regular dental visits catch issues early and allow adjustments. Brush them twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste, including the surfaces that meet your gums, remove them at night, and store them in a denture solution.
