Dental Pain: When to Go to the ER vs. Call the Dentist

Severe tooth pain understandably feels like an emergency, and sometimes it is one — but most dental problems, even painful ones, are better and faster handled at a dentist's office than an ER, which generally isn't equipped to actually treat the underlying dental issue.

When It's a True Emergency Room Situation

Go to the ER (or call 911) for facial swelling that's affecting your ability to breathe or swallow, a jaw that may be broken or dislocated, uncontrolled bleeding that isn't slowing with pressure, or swelling that's spreading rapidly, especially toward the eye or down the neck. These are signs an infection or injury may be putting more than just the tooth at risk.

When It's a Same-Day Dental Visit

Severe tooth pain without spreading swelling, a knocked-out or badly chipped tooth, a lost filling or crown, a suspected abscess with localized swelling, or an injury to the mouth without signs of a broken jaw all belong at a dentist's office — and most of these genuinely need same-day attention rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Why the ER Often Isn't the Right First Stop

Most emergency rooms can prescribe antibiotics or pain medication for a dental infection, but they typically can't perform the actual dental treatment — a filling, extraction, or root canal referral — that resolves the underlying problem. That means an ER visit for a non-life-threatening dental issue often ends with a prescription and a recommendation to see a dentist anyway, at a much higher cost and a longer wait.
