Getting a Second Opinion on a Crown or Bridge Recommendation

Told you need a crown — or several at once? Here's when it's worth a second look before committing, and what usually determines whether a crown is actually necessary.

Crowns are common, but they're also one of the more frequent subjects of second-opinion requests — especially when several are recommended at once, or at a first visit with a new dentist. That's not automatically a red flag, but it's a reasonable moment to pause and ask questions.

What Usually Determines If a Crown Is Necessary

Generally, a crown becomes the right call when a significant portion of the tooth's structure is gone — from decay, a large existing filling, or a fracture — and a filling or bonding alone wouldn't hold up to normal biting force. Back teeth, which absorb more chewing force, tend to need crowns more often than front teeth in borderline cases. If a tooth has relatively minor damage, a more conservative option like a filling or composite bonding may be enough.

When to Get a Second Opinion

If you haven't had significant dental issues before and are suddenly told you need three, four, or more crowns at once, or if a crown is being recommended on a tooth that doesn't hurt or bother you in any way, it's worth having another dentist look at the same X-rays and give you their independent read. Bring your existing images if you have them — it saves you from paying for and being exposed to imaging you may not need again.

What We'll Tell You

We'll examine the tooth, review the imaging, and give you an honest answer — whether that means confirming the crown is the right call, suggesting a more conservative alternative, or flagging questions worth bringing back to your original dentist. See our full crown and bridge cost breakdown if cost is part of what you're weighing.
