Loose Permanent Tooth in Adults: Causes and What to Do

A loose baby tooth is normal. A loose permanent tooth in an adult never is — it's always a sign that something is affecting the structures holding that tooth in place, and it's worth getting evaluated rather than waiting to see what happens.

The Most Common Cause: Gum Disease

Advanced periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth looseness in adults. As gum disease progresses, it breaks down the bone and ligament that anchor the tooth in its socket, and a tooth can start to shift even though the tooth itself is perfectly healthy.

Other Causes

Trauma from an injury or a hard bite, chronic teeth grinding that puts excessive force on a tooth over time, and less commonly a bite that's putting uneven pressure on one specific tooth can all contribute to looseness outside of gum disease.

Why It Needs Prompt Attention

A loose tooth caught early — especially if the cause is gum disease — can often be stabilized and the underlying problem treated before the tooth is lost. Left alone, the same process that loosened it typically continues, and the window to save the tooth narrows.
