How Much Does a Teeth Cleaning Cost in NYC?

How Much Does a Teeth Cleaning Cost in NYC?

A cleaning is one of the most common dental visits, and pricing questions about it are just as common — here's a realistic, NYC-specific breakdown of what to expect.

What a “Cleaning” Usually Includes

Most practices, ours included, pair a routine cleaning with a same-day exam and X-rays when they're due, rather than billing the cleaning as a fully standalone service. In New York City, that combination — a cleaning plus an exam, without insurance — commonly falls in the $250–$450 range. If you're comparing a bare cleaning-only price against that figure, know that most quotes you'll see already assume the exam is bundled in, since dentists want to check for cavities and gum issues at the same visit.

What Changes the Price

A few factors move you up or down within that range: whether X-rays are needed (and how many), whether it's a first visit or a returning patient, and how much buildup there is to remove. None of these are surprises — we'll walk through what your specific visit needs before starting.

Routine Cleaning vs. Deep Cleaning

A standard cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar above the gumline and typically takes 30–60 minutes. If gum disease has progressed and tartar has built up below the gumline, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is needed instead — a more involved procedure, often billed per quadrant of the mouth rather than as a flat fee, and priced meaningfully higher than a routine cleaning as a result. We'll only recommend a deep cleaning if the exam actually shows it's needed, and we'll explain the pricing difference clearly if it applies to you. See our full deep cleaning breakdown for more detail.

How Insurance Usually Factors In

Most PPO dental plans cover two routine cleanings per year at or near 100% as preventive care, which is one of the more generous benefits most plans offer — it's worth using even if you're not using much else on your plan that year. Deep cleanings are typically covered at a lower percentage, closer to how other restorative treatment is billed, since they're treating an existing condition rather than routine prevention. See our insurance and payment page for the carriers we work with.
