Do I Need to Fix My Overbite as an Adult?

A lot of adults were told as kids that they had an overbite, never got braces, and have more or less forgotten about it since — until something changes and they start wondering if it's finally worth addressing. Short answer: it depends on what your overbite is actually doing, not just that you have one.

A Class II bite from the side: the upper teeth sit ahead of the lower teeth. See our full breakdown of Class I, II, and III for what this means.

When It's Probably Fine to Leave Alone

A mild overbite with no pain, no unusual wear, and teeth you can clean easily is often just a cosmetic variation. If nothing has changed and you're not bothered by how it looks, there's no medical requirement to correct it.

Signs It's Worth a Closer Look

A few changes are worth mentioning at your next visit: teeth that seem to be wearing down faster than they used to, especially the lower front teeth; jaw soreness, clicking, or morning headaches, which can mean the muscles are overworking to compensate for the bite; increasing difficulty flossing or cleaning certain teeth because of how they overlap; or a bite that feels like it's shifted, which can happen gradually as teeth wear or shift over the years. None of these are emergencies, but they're reasons to get an actual opinion rather than guess.

What Happens If a Significant Overbite Goes Untreated

In a mild case, probably not much. In a more significant, longstanding deep bite, the lower front teeth can take repeated abnormal pressure from the upper teeth every time you close your mouth — over years, that can wear the lower teeth down and, in severe cases, contribute to real tooth damage and loss. It's the same mechanism as the case shown on our Invisalign page. The bite doesn't have to be that extreme to be worth watching.

Treatment as an Adult

Correcting a bite doesn't require having done it as a teenager. Most mild-to-moderate adult overbites are candidates for Invisalign® clear aligners, which can shift both the teeth and, to a degree, the bite relationship. More significant jaw discrepancies may need traditional braces or a referral for a more involved evaluation — something we'll tell you honestly rather than trying to force aligners to do more than they should.
