Ready to Whiten Your Teeth Without Damaging Them?
Teeth whitening removes stains and brightens your smile in a single appointment. A whitening agent breaks apart discolored molecules to lift stains and brighten tooth color.

Why Teeth Become Stained Over Time
Tooth enamel is porous and absorbs colored pigments from foods and beverages, as well as from smoking and certain medications. Whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental treatments — easy, effective, and affordable.
Am I a Candidate?
Most patients with stained but decay-free teeth are good candidates. We'll evaluate the cause of your staining to make sure whitening will give you the results you want.
In-Office vs. At-Home: Which Is Actually Better?
The honest answer is that they're both legitimate, well-studied options — the right one depends on how fast you want results and how much sensitivity you're willing to tolerate along the way.
| At-Home Custom Trays | In-Office | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Custom-fitted trays with a lower-concentration gel, worn daily or overnight for 2–4 weeks | A stronger gel applied by us in the chair, in a few 15–20 minute rounds |
| Speed | Gradual, over a few weeks | Immediately visible, same visit |
| Sensitivity | Generally the lowest of any method — considered the gold standard for this reason | More common and more noticeable, given the stronger concentration |
| Effort required | Depends on you sticking with the daily routine | None — we do the work in one or two visits |
One thing worth knowing: combining an in-office visit with at-home trays doesn't produce a whiter result than either one done well on its own — it mainly adds sensitivity without adding benefit. We'll recommend whichever single approach fits your timeline, not a combination by default.
What Whitening Can — and Can't — Fix
Responds Well
Whitening works reliably on natural tooth staining from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, aging, and mild fluorosis — the common, everyday causes of a duller smile.
Doesn't Respond, or Responds Unpredictably
Whitening gel has no effect on crowns, veneers, or existing fillings — if those are visible when you smile, they'll stand out more once the natural teeth around them lighten, and may need to be replaced afterward to match. Staining from tetracycline (an older antibiotic) or from metal exposure also tends to respond poorly and unevenly. We'll flag either situation at your consultation rather than let you find out after treatment.
One more option worth knowing about: a single tooth that's darkened from the inside after a root canal can often be whitened from within (called internal or “walking bleach” bleaching) rather than needing a crown or veneer just to match its neighbors. Ask us about this if you have a root-canal-treated tooth that's darker than the rest of your smile.

FAQ: Teeth Whitening at Zusin Dental, NYC
If your teeth have become stained from foods, beverages, smoking, or oral hygiene habits, you're likely a candidate. Stains from medication may not respond as well, and teeth need to be free of decay before whitening.
Professional whitening uses a stronger concentration of whitening agent, typically producing faster, more dramatic results than drugstore kits. It's applied in-office, though some cosmetic dentists also offer take-home trays.
Your lips and gums are shielded, a whitening agent is applied for about 30–60 minutes, then rinsed off. Afterward, teeth may be temporarily sensitive to hot and cold for a few days; avoid highly pigmented foods and drinks for the first 24 hours, since the agent continues working during that window.
Typically six months to three years, averaging about a year. Good oral hygiene and limiting pigmented foods/drinks help results last longer. Dr. Boris Zusin may provide take-home trays to help maintain your results.
