A Natural Appearance That Bonds Directly to Your Tooth
Composite resin — the same versatile material used for tooth-colored fillings and composite veneers — fills small holes and surface defects with a natural-looking, tooth-colored restoration.
Am I a Candidate?
Good candidates have minor chips, cracks, or small gaps in their front teeth that they'd like addressed quickly and affordably.
Why the Bonding Technique Matters as Much as the Material
How well composite bonding holds up long-term comes down far more to technique than to the resin itself.
Enamel Bonds Reliably
The outer enamel layer of your tooth bonds to composite in a highly predictable, well-understood way — a mild acid gently roughens the surface at a microscopic level, and the resin flows in and locks itself into that texture as it hardens. This is why bonding on enamel, kept dry during placement, tends to hold up so well over the years.
Dentin Is Trickier
If bonding needs to reach the softer, inner dentin layer — say, for a deeper chip or a cavity closer to the nerve — the bond is inherently less predictable, since dentin is a moist, more complex surface to begin with. We use adhesive systems and techniques specifically suited to dentin in those cases, and we're upfront when a repair involves dentin rather than enamel alone, since it can modestly affect how long the result is expected to last.
If It Chips or Discolors: Repair, Not Replace
One of the real advantages of composite bonding is that it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. If a bonded tooth chips, stains, or just needs a refresh years later, the existing composite can usually be repaired rather than removed and redone from scratch — we roughen the old surface and apply fresh adhesive and composite, which bonds well when the surface is properly prepped first. This keeps the visit shorter, the cost lower, and preserves whatever natural tooth structure is still there, compared to starting over completely.

FAQ: Composite Bonding at Zusin Dental, NYC
If you have minor damage to your front teeth — chips or cracks — or a small gap between teeth, you may be a good candidate. A consultation will confirm whether bonding is the right fit.
Dr. Boris Zusin applies composite resin in layers, hardening each before adding the next, then shapes and polishes the final layer to blend with your natural tooth. Anesthesia isn't always needed but can be offered.
Bonding is completed in a single visit, so you can return to your normal routine right away. Minor sensitivity may occur briefly. Most bonding lasts about 5–7 years with good oral hygiene and regular exams.
