The first dental visit sets the tone for how your child feels about the dentist for years afterward — a little preparation goes a long way toward making it a positive one.
When to Schedule It
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling the first visit by your child's first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth coming in — whichever comes first. That's earlier than most parents expect, but baby teeth are at risk of decay as soon as they emerge, and starting early builds a much stronger foundation for future visits.
How to Talk About It
Keep the language simple and neutral — "the dentist counts your teeth and helps them stay strong" works well. Avoid words like "hurt," "shot," or "pain," even in reassurance ("it won't hurt!"), since those words plant the idea of pain that wasn't there before.
Practice at Home
A fun warm-up: let your child "count" your teeth with a soft toothbrush, or practice opening wide like a lion. Reading a picture book about a dentist visit beforehand also helps make the whole idea familiar rather than novel and unpredictable.
What Actually Happens at the Visit
Early visits are brief and gentle — usually a quick look at the teeth and gums, a chat with you about teething, feeding habits, and fluoride, and a demonstration of how to brush your child's teeth at home. There's rarely anything uncomfortable involved, which is exactly the point — it's about building familiarity before any actual treatment is ever needed.
