Extractions

Helping you get you out of pain and your dental health back on track.

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure that removes teeth from the jaw and the surrounding areas, typically with forceps. The most common reason for a tooth extraction is to remove an unhealthy tooth or a tooth that poses a threat to your oral health.

There are two different types of tooth extractions:

Simple & Surgical Extractions.

Single extractions are generally done when the tooth is completely above the gums. Surgical extraction are usually reserved for teeth that cannot be reached with regular forceps, often because they are partially or completely impacted under the gums.

Did you Know?

Despite the fact that tooth extractions sound horrific, modern dental technology has made them safe, routine dental procedures. During a tooth extraction, you will be sedated and numbed so that you feel no discomfort. In fact, most people don't even remember the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need a tooth extraction?

You may need a tooth extraction if:

  • You have a tooth infection so severe that it has spread beyond the tooth to the surrounding gum tissues.
  • A cavity gets so deep that it reaches all the way to the root of your tooth.
  • Decay or damage extends into the nerve chamber below the tooth, which contains tissues that carry blood and other fluids that support your teeth.
  • You have a broken tooth that cannot be repaired.
  • The wisdom teeth are impacted below the gums, causing pain or infection.
  • Your dentist recommends extractions to make space for orthodontic appliances or other dental work that cannot be performed if the tooth remains in place.
What can I expect when having a tooth extraction at Zusin Dental?

When having a tooth extraction at Zusin Dental, you can expect to be sedated and anesthetized to keep you calm and comfortable during the procedure. Depending on the type of extraction being performed, different sedation options may be available. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Zusin will perform either a simple or surgical extraction. In some cases, a simple extraction may turn into a surgical extraction.

What can I expect after having a tooth extraction?

After a tooth extraction, Dr. Zusin will pack the area with cotton and/or gauze until the bleeding stops. As the sedation wears off, you may notice that this packing makes your face feel huge. However, it is important that you keep the material in place until directed to remove it. Dr. Zusin will provide you with other postoperative instructions that you will also need to follow for a faster recovery. After your extraction, you should expect some degree of bleeding and swelling. Information on how to manage this will be included in your postoperative instructions. if you have any questions, please call our office.
